On-Farm Corn and Soybean Planter Demonstration Trials

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Introduction Corn and soybean planting is one of the most critical operations of the season. Operating the planter with the proper soil conditions for proper placement of the seed to obtain the correct seed-soil contact is important to optimize yields and reduce problems later in the season with plant and root growth. As corn and soybean seed prices continue to rise, and grain prices fall, it is important for farmers to find a population that maximizes both yield and profit. Planting too high of a corn population can result in increased barrenness and thus lower yields, but too low of a population also can result in lower yields. Past studies have indicated soybean yields are similar across a wide range of populations, but too low of a population can result in reduced yields and too high of a population can reduce profits. The objective of these trials was to investigate the effect of various planter operations on corn and soybean yield.

Variable-rate Phosphorus Fertilization: On-farm Research Methods and Evaluation for Corn and Soybean

This study adapted precision agriculture technologies to commonly used field-scale strip trials and compared fixed and variable phosphorus (P) fertilization for corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Differential global positioning receivers, yield monitors, and grid soil sampling were used. Variablerate fertilization reduced considerably the total amount of P fertilizer appli...

Iowa Ag Review Creation of a Wto-friendly Farm Safety Net Purpose of U.s. Farm Programs Three Kinds of Payments: Direct, Countercyclical, and Loan Deficiency

Bumper crops have quickly turned the corn and soybean price boom into a bust. Newcrop corn and soybean futures contracts are down 40 percent and 35 percent respectively in just a few short months. Of course, those farmers that had the foresight to lock in at high prices are completely unaffected by the drop in price. For them, market volatility has created profit opportunities. But all is not l...

Phosphorus and Potassium Placement Methods for Corn and Soybean: an Iowa Perspective

Increasing fertilizer prices and awareness of potential impacts of excessive or badly applied nutrients on water quality has renewed interest in fertilizer management strategies that reduce nutrient inputs or improve efficacy. Fertilizer recommendations for phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in Iowa and most states of the Corn Belt are based on soil testing and maintenance of desirable soil-test ...

Effects of the GM Controversy on Iowa Corn-Soybean Farmers' Acreage Allocation Decisions

Prior to the 2000 planting season, some industry obsemers predicted acreage of genetically modified crops would decline dramatically. However, actual 2000 plantings presented a puzzle. Farmers reduced their acreage of genetically modified corn, but concurrently increased their acreage of genetically modified soybeans. We demonstrate that it may be theoretically optimal for risk-averse farmers t...

Phosphorus losses from monitored fields with conservation practices in the Lake Erie Basin, USA

Conservation practices are implemented on farm fields in the USA through Farm Bill programs; however, there is a need for greater verification that these practices provide environmental benefits (e.g., water quality). This study was conducted to assess the impact of Farm Bill eligible conservation practices on soluble P (SP) and total P (TP) losses from four fields that were monitored between 2...
